Reunion island in the Indian Ocean

Reunion Island is located 8 420 km from Paris in the middle of the Indian Ocean.

It belongs to the archipelago of the Mascarene Islands, including Mauritius and Rodrigues, whose volcanic formation is linked to the emergence of a hot spot.

Reunion Island also shares its situation in the Indian Ocean with island states such as the Comoros archipelago to the west in the Mozambique Channel, South India as well as Sri Lanka and the Seychelles Islands to the north. To the east, the island of Diego Garcia as a territory of the United States.

Further south, there are the uninhabited Scattered Islands belonging to the TAAF (French Antarctic Southern Territories). With its strategic location, Reunion Island can be the starting point for your trip to the Indian Ocean!

What is the right season to travel to Reunion Island?

On the island of Reunion, located in the southern hemisphere, the rhythm of the seasons is reversed compared to metropolitan France in the northern hemisphere.

Summer solstice

The summer solstice takes place on December 21 and marks the beginning of the southern summer or rainy season. It is the longest day in terms of sunshine duration as on June 21 in Metropolitan France. Thus, from November to April, warmer and wetter temperatures rise to 30°C on the Reunionese coast and tropical rains become common. Nevertheless, despite strong solar radiation, the Indian Ocean comes to temper the high temperatures thanks to the island situation of Reunion Island.

Winter Solstice

The days then decrease until the winter solstice on June 21, the shortest day of the year in sunlight. The southern winter defines a dry season from June to September that will start from the winter solstice. This is the mildest climatic period with temperatures dropping to around 20°C, followed by a sharp decrease in the frequency of rainfall and tropical episodes.

Apart from the southern winter, you can choose as the best time to go to Reunion Island the months of transition between equinoxes and solstices. That is, from the autumnal equinox on March 21 until May. Either from the spring equinox on September 21 to October. In these short months of spring and autumn, the meteorological phenomena of rain and heat are less marked. Your stay will be all the more pleasant!
