Mayotte, nicknamed the Seahorse Island, is one of the wonders of the Indian Ocean. While its popularity has yet to soar, it remains a raw gem: over 160 kilometers of coral reefs and one of the largest lagoons in the world. Located between Madagascar and Mozambique, this small Comorian archipelago is a discreet island with exotic beauty. Less visited than its neighbor Réunion, it offers unspoiled and wild landscapes to its visitors.
Stroll through one of the many plantations of its traditional flower, ylang-ylang, which has earned it the sweet nickname "island of perfumes." Be amazed in the Saziley Reserve as you witness an incredible underwater ballet, and savor a perfectly spiced chicken pilao.
Finally, set off to discover the wonders of Maoré by flying to Dzaoudzi with Corsair.
Traveling to Dzaoudzi: all the practical information
How to get around in Dzaoudzi?
Transportation options are not very developed in Mayotte. For example, the "taxi-brousse" is the traditional rural local transport. It will take you all around the island for just a few euros. However, if you prefer a more reliable way to get around, opt for a shared or private taxi. But be cautious of illegal taxis operating on the island. Our tip? Check for the official regulatory sticker on the windshield. Lastly, if you go with a private taxi, note that prices can vary greatly!
What are the travel requirements before visiting Dzaoudzi?
Mayotte offers activities all year round. However, during the high season, from April to October, it’s best to book in advance. For example, if you want to visit a ylang-ylang plantation, choose the Imany garden located in the center of the island. We recommend contacting the plantation as soon as you book your flight to ensure it fits into your itinerary.
Please note that while health conditions in Mayotte are generally good, there is still a risk of malaria on the island. For peace of mind, taking antimalarial medication may be helpful. Be sure to consult your doctor for advice.

Put on your fins and dive into the most beautiful lagoon in the world
The island of the lagoon lives up to its name, with no less than 18 meters of double coral reefs surrounding Mayotte. Dive right in with your mask and snorkel to discover the most stunning coral reefs between April and November. An exceptional biodiversity awaits you: sharks and manta rays swim alongside sea turtles and dolphins. Dreamy, right? Then head to the little paradise of La Passe, located on the island’s east coast, and immerse yourself in waters ranging from 25 to 28 °C.
Be amazed at dusk by the nesting of sea turtles
Have you ever witnessed sea turtles laying their eggs at nightfall on wide sandy beaches? If not, visit between March and June at one of the two Moya beaches on Petite-Terre or the large beach at Saziley. Get in touch with one of the many specialist associations like Oulanga Na Nyamba, whose goal is to raise awareness about protecting these iconic animals through night-time excursions.
Immerse yourself in Mahoran culture
Mayotte is deeply rooted in a rich culinary culture, shaped by diverse influences. Try a beef or chicken pilao and savor its perfectly spiced flavors — a local must! Also, dare to explore sweet and savory combinations with toubtoub, small cassava balls dried in coconut. And don’t miss out on a vitamin-packed cocktail of delicious tropical fruits found on the island: papaya, guava, pineapple, or mango.
For a deeper cultural experience, why not try learning some local languages: Shimaoré and Kibushi? While French is the official language, some dialects still thrive in more remote areas.
Challenge yourself with a hike up Mount Choungui
Attention thrill-seeking athletes: this one's for you! Do you dare take on Mount Choungui and its 594-meter summit? Follow trails winding through undergrowth and claim your reward after an hour of climbing: a breathtaking 360° view over the southern part of the island. Be aware, this hike is not for everyone! Tree roots and trunks may require some acrobatic moves. Keep in mind, the round trip takes about two hours, including a few well-deserved breaks to enjoy the view.
