Getting Around Bamako and the Rest of Mali

You’ve finally arrived in Mali, at Bamako Airport. The Malian capital is located about fifteen kilometers south of the airport. For getting around the city or other major towns, you can choose between taking the yellow taxis or using public minibuses called SOTRAMA, which are relatively affordable.
For intercity travel, opt for private bus companies considered more reliable (Binke Transport, Bani Transport, etc.), which are gradually replacing the older, less comfortable Peugeot 404 bush taxis, where extra luggage fees may apply.

Renting a car locally is not recommended, as civil liability insurance is rarely observed by Malian drivers.

Things to Do in Bamako

Bamako captivates with its energy, diversity, and rich culture. For a first experience, start by exploring the city center, the vibrant heart of the capital. There, you’ll find bustling streets, typical cafés, and especially the famous Bamako market, where crafts, spices, textiles, and local souvenirs immerse you in an authentic atmosphere.

Among the landmark sites, don’t miss Bamako’s purple cathedral, whose unique architecture attracts visitors from around the world. A few kilometers away, the National Museum of Mali takes you on a journey through time: archaeological exhibitions, ritual objects, traditional costumes, and musical instruments showcase the multiple facets of Malian heritage.

For a nature break, head to Mali’s national park, a large green space in the heart of the city, perfect for a walk or a picnic. To unwind at the end of the day, take a stroll along the Niger River, where locals gather to watch the sunset and enjoy the gentle climate.
Bamako thus reveals its treasures of history, culture, and conviviality: an ideal starting point to explore more of Mali.
